If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. -Albert Einstein

About

The person behind this website is Dr. Costas Leon. Costas has 25 years of teaching experience in mathematics, statistics and economics from post-secondary educational institutions to college to public university. He also has more than 17 years of teaching experience in business and hotel management schools in Switzerland. Apart from teaching, Costas has conducted statistical analysis in sociological research and worked as financial and statistical analyst as well as software developer. His main research (academic journal articles, conferences and a book) is in the field of macroeconometrics, and in particular in economic fluctuations and the propagation of random shocks in macroeconomy by means of time and frequency domain methods. He holds a PhD in economics in the area of macroeconomics and time series econometrics. He lives in Lucerne, Switzerland.

On a different note, after years of running this website, I’ve noticed a steady decline in students’ enthusiasm for genuine, independent research. There are several reasons behind this shif: uncritical use of AI tools, the uncontrolable rise of contract cheating services, and the lack of care or support from the heads of educational institutions. Academic staff who work hard to encourage critical thinking and meaningful discovery often find themselves fighting an uphill battle without substantive help at best, or even being the target of ridicule and intimidation.

I’m still doing my best to promote authentic education, but I have to admit, I don’t feel very hopeful about where humanity is headed. If we’re going to turn things around, social and educational institutions need to rethink their priorities and refocus their efforts on human-centered progress. Only through such efforts can humanity rediscover its curiosity, creativity, and capacity for innovation towards human-oriented values and goals.
